Many of you are probably aware that The Players are a long-established group, but it comes as a surprise (even to us) that next year we celebrate our 80th Birthday. The Players were formed back in 1927, initially with the colourful name of The Red Triangle Concert Party and then for many years as The Cardiff YMCA Players.Productions were staged in the theatre at the old YMCA building in Station Terrace until 1978, when demolition and development of the site resulted in the move to our present home. Of course, there was no theatre here then. The building had been part of Our Lady’s Convent School and the YMCA kindly allocated us three old classrooms to convert for theatre use. For over two years, productions continued to be staged in a church hall in Monthermer Road whilst members toiled to complete the theatre that we occupy today. November 1981 saw us stage our first production here – Alan Ayckbourn’s “Bedroom Farce”, which as you can see we are reviving for this our special year. So next year will be Happy 80th Birthday to The Players and we would like you to celebrate it with us.
